Example 1 of 5
The pizza string
Friday, a 10-inch pizza
A pizza has diameter 10 inches. Using π = 3.14, what is the circumference?
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| diameter d | 10 in |
| radius r | 5 in |
| π | 3.14 |
- Circumference is the distance around the edge of the circle.
- The diameter is 10 inches across the circle through its center. To find the distance around, multiply the diameter by pi. For this problem, use 3.14 as an approximation for pi.
- C = 3.14 × 10
- C = 31.4
- A check uses the radius, which is half the diameter.
- 10 ÷ 2 = 5
- The distance around is also 2 × π × radius.
- C = 2 × 3.14 × 5 = 31.4
Answer: 31.4 inches
